Use these questions to think about what purported truth the author is trying to convince you of.

  1. What surprised me?
  2. What does the author think I already know?
  3. What challenged, changed, or confirmed what I already know?

Use these signposts to FIGURE OUT how the author is trying to change minds and inform us as readers. Remember, not every informational text contains the five signposts.
